How to Use the Dragon Snacks Game in Speech Therapy
This week in speech is going to be MAGICAL! Why? Because we’re playing Dragon Snacks! This game is just adorable and endless fun. I’ve honestly never met a kid who didn’t like it. And we get to play in the DARK! It helps you see the dragon’s lights better. Turning off the lights is always exciting!
Take turns waving your hand in front of the dragon’s nose. His belly will magically light up, revealing all of the treasures hiding inside. Remember where they are, because his nose will light up either red, yellow, green, or blue, and that’s the color treasure you’ll try to pull out! Look below for some ways I use Dragon Snacks in my speech room.
Requesting: Request a turn. Articulation: I give the dragon a name that starts with the child’s speech sound. For example, if we’re targeting initial “L,” I’ll name the dragon Larry. I incorporate the name into a sentence or carrier phrase and have the child say it for practice. “Larry, let’s open your mouth!” or “What’s inside Larry?” Commenting: Since the dragon is so exciting, he creates some good opportunities for comments and other social exchanges. Some comments I use often are “whoa,” “cool,” “awesome,” “look,” “uh-oh,” Color concepts: Label colors as they come out or lay them out on the table and facilitate an identification task. Reinforcer: There’s nothing wrong with a good reinforcer! I often pair this game with Boom Cards on my iPad, articulation cards, or language cards and use it as a reward between practice sets.
This game is great for older kids (3+) who you trust not to put small pieces in their mouths. I’ve linked it below for you! Have fun!
