Have you ever heard of Mini Brands? They are teeny tiny versions of food and toys made by Zuru. You buy a mystery ball, open it, and discover the 5 different mini objects hiding inside. The kids on my caseload are obsessed with them… And I would be lying if I said I wasn’t obsessed with them, myself! They capture the kids’ interest, spark conversations, and make our sessions fun! Here are some of the ways I use Mini Brands in my speech-language therapy sessions!
Describing: Describe the attributes of each Mini Brand. What group is it in? What color is it? Where do you find it? What shape is it? What do we do with it? What does it taste like? I made an anchor chart to help you with this! Grab it here for $1!
Speech Sounds: Gather Mini Brands that include the student’s speech sound and some that don’t. Say the word/brand aloud and ask the child to listen to the sounds. Did it have their speech sound? What position is the sound in? Organize the Mini Brands by sound and position to target auditory discrimination and improve generalization! Click here to download my mini objects sorting pages for only $1! Print out the pages and write in which sound you’re sorting.
Inferencing: Pick a Mini Brand and hide it in your hands or in an opaque container. Give the student clues about what the object is. For example, “It’s a type of food. It’s brown and creamy. You put it on a sandwich with jelly.” Once they guess the correct object, talk about its attributes!
Prepositions: Put a variety of containers on your table or use the furniture in your room. Give the student directions containing prepositions, directing them where to put each object. “Put the sauce under the table” or “Take the paint out of the basket.” Target answering ‘where’ questions, too! “Where are the Bagel Bites?” “On top of the box!”
Conversation Starter: Look through the collection of Mini Brands together and discuss which foods/toys are your favorite, what you’ve tried before and what you haven’t, etc.
